Bees possess a surprising cognitive ability that rivals some higher mammals.
Recent research has shown that honey bees can memorize and recognize human faces with astonishing accuracy, using the same technique they use to identify different types of flowers.
Their brain, the size of a sesame seed, processes facial features as a set of complex patterns. Bees break down faces into individual elements such as eyes, nose, and mouth, creating a unique visual 'fingerprint' for each person.
This skill helps them in nature to recognize specific flowers, remember the best nectar sources, and communicate locations to other bees. A 2005 study trained bees to associate human faces with sugar water rewards, achieving 80% accuracy in recognition.
