Magnetic refrigeration: The silent cooling that eliminates chemicals and saves the planet

Most cooling systems we use today, from our refrigerators to air conditioners, rely on refrigerant gases that are potent pollutants, contributing significantly to global warming. However, an emerging technology promises a future of clean and efficient cooling: magnetic refrigeration.

Based on the magnetocaloric effect, this innovation uses materials that change their temperature when exposed to a magnetic field. When a magnetocaloric material is subjected to a magnetic field, its atomic magnetic moments align, causing the material to heat up and dissipate energy as heat. When the magnetic field is removed, the moments misalign, and the material absorbs heat from its surroundings, cooling it down. This cycle repeats to generate continuous cooling.

The benefits are notable: it completely eliminates the need for environmentally harmful refrigerant gases, such as hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). In addition, magnetic refrigeration systems are potentially more energy-efficient and operate much more quietly, as they lack noisy compressors. Research at the Technical University of Denmark and other institutions has developed prototypes of magnetic refrigerators that already surpass the efficiency of some conventional systems. Over the next decade, this technology is expected to revolutionize how we keep our food fresh and our homes climate-controlled, offering a sustainable and powerful alternative against climate change.
