The effect of melatonin beyond sleep: how the dark hormone regulates your immune system and may slow aging

Melatonin is known for its role in the sleep-wake cycle, produced by the pineal gland in response to darkness. However, recent research reveals that this hormone goes far beyond inducing sleep. It is one of the most potent antioxidants known, capable of neutralizing free radicals that damage DNA and accelerate aging.

Studies in journals such as Journal of Pineal Research show that melatonin stimulates the production of key antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase, and directly protects mitochondria, the "powerhouses" of our cells. In animal models, optimal melatonin levels have been associated with lower chronic inflammation and improved immune function, fighting age-related diseases.

A fascinating fact: melatonin production decreases drastically after age 40, coinciding with an increased vulnerability to degenerative diseases. Some scientists postulate that melatonin therapy, in physiological doses and under supervision, could not only improve sleep quality, but also act as a shield against cellular deterioration, offering a window into healthy longevity.
