Penguins, although flightless, possess extraordinary physical abilities that make them exceptional aquatic athletes.
Adélie and emperor penguins can jump vertically up to 3 meters out of the water, an impressive feat considering they are birds that have lost the ability to fly.
This ability is due to their 'porpoising' technique, where they swim at high speed underwater and use their momentum to catapult themselves into the air. Their hydrodynamic bodies and powerful pectoral muscles allow them to reach speeds of up to 35 km/h underwater.
Jumping serves multiple purposes: escaping marine predators like leopard seals, reaching high ice floes, and breathing during high-speed chases. Their technique is so efficient that it inspired the design of some modern aquatic vehicles that replicate their wave-like motion.
