The incredible secret of crocodile tears

Crocodile tears are not just an expression: these reptiles truly cry while eating, but not out of sadness.

This fascinating phenomenon has a very interesting scientific explanation. Crocodiles possess specialized tear glands located near their eyes that activate during feeding due to the pressure exerted when chewing.

When a crocodile bites and vigorously shakes its prey, the jaw muscles compress the tear glands, forcing the secretion of tears. This process is completely involuntary and has no connection to emotions.

Crocodile tears contain a different chemical composition than human tears:

  • Higher concentration of proteins and minerals
  • Less water content
  • Presence of unique antimicrobial compounds

This evolutionary mechanism could serve to protect their eyes from dust and debris during hunting. The expression 'crocodile tears' to describe fake sadness comes from the medieval belief that these reptiles wept for their victims.
